Museum Beelden aan Zee is a unique cultural institution in the Netherlands; it is the only Dutch museum that focuses exclusively on contemporary international sculpture. Its founders, Theo and Lida Scholten, started collecting in the late sixties and devoted a large part of their lives to acquiring rare works of art. They laid the basis for the current collection of the museum, which opened in 1994 and now holds nearly two thousand sculptures, reliefs and medals and houses an ambitious exhibition and educational program.
The first sculpture in the collection was purchased by the founders, Theo and Lida Scholten, in 1966. The collection now comprises nearly one thousand sculptures and several hundred medals. Most of the sculptures date from the second half of the twentieth century. There are large and small sculptures, made by famous and less famous sculptors from all over the world, produced from a wide variety of materials.
